Lyrics

Early in the morning
Awakened by the blast
Sixteen hundred metres underground
Deadly methane gas

For the men who worked the black coal
A reminder of the past
In Plymouth, Nova Scotia
Twenty-six miners were trapped.

Throughout the world on May the ninth
Nineteen ninety-two
The universe was shaken
By the story on the news

All people felt the sadness
For the miners down below
And how that deadly Foord coal seam
Had dealt that fatal blow

Through the twisted beams
And the mountains of debris
The draegermen searched the mine
Trying to set their brothers free

Praying with the families
Hoping just the same
A community alive with love
And we pray it will remain

Out in Pictou County
Black ribbons did appear
In mourning for the families
Who lost their loved ones dear

For love, life, and money
These brave men go beneath
To provide their families
All their basic needs

Out in Pictou County
Black ribbons did appear
In mourning for the families
Who lost their loved ones dear

A life in the darkness
To bring light to life above
An ode to the brave men
and the coal

Though forewarned by the fathers
The authorities did proceed
To open up another mine
On the deadly Foord coal seam
