On June 4, 2014, social media lit up with unconfirmed reports of a shooter on the loose in Moncton, New Brunswick. The reports turned out to be true, and a man-hunt was under way for Justin Bourque, who had killed three RCMP officers and wounded two others. He was eventually found and arrested two days later.
Because this tragedy involves intentional violence and murder, it doesn’t fit within the scope of my disaster songs project (see our definition of “disaster” in an earlier blog). Nevertheless, it’s fascinating to see the emergence of multiple songs about this tragedy already, and I thought I would document them here.
