Lyrics

They left their home that fateful morn,
Bright sunshine in their eyes,
With thoughts of work and family,
A wonderful day to be alive.

“What did they think,” we all would ask,
On this, their final day?
Were their thoughts of life and love and loss,
Friends made along the way?

“Why didn’t I kiss her” he wondered aloud?
And another would swear he saw God in the clouds
“My boy made the team, could he tell I was proud?”
And she prayed by the door with her lovely head bowed.

“I’ll tell her I love her when I see her again.”
“I’m flying right back there to pick up more men.”
“A few more years left, I can just see the end.”
“I’ll be home for your birthday, we’ll have a laugh then.”

“Is the sound any different than I’ve heard before?”
“My wife may be right ’bout that new job on shore.”
“I’m blessed when I think of some people so poor.”
“Gonna write me a song when I’m back on the shore.”

“What did they think,” we all would ask,
On this, their final day?
Were their thoughts of life and love and loss,
Great friends along the way?

“We’re not gonna make it, we’re out of control!”
“I’m ready to go now, may God rest my soul.”
“Tell my kids that I love ’em and watch them grow old.”
“Your love’s all around me, the water’s not cold.”

The sun and the wind and the sea and the sky:
“I’m alive, there’s a reason, please, God, tell me why?”
“We’re all here together, we’ve said our goodbyes.”
And the sound of the chopper came out of the sky.

“What did they think,” we all would ask,
On this, their final day?

  1. This song was written and sung by my fantastic Uncle Randy. I’m so proud of him and the wonderful music he produces. His music is a real reflection of himself….solid, full of love and compassion, and honest.
